Join us at the Mentor Public Library to see a detailed display of President Garfield's life during his time in Ohio. The display will be up from November 1-30 in commemoration of James A. Early Life
James Abram Garfield was born on November 19, 1831, in a small log cabin in Moreland Hills, Ohio. He was the last president born in a log cabin and grew up in a poor family that faced many hardships.
Education
Garfield's early education was limited, but he showed a strong desire to learn. He attended a local school and later enrolled at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute in Hiram, Ohio, where he worked as a janitor to pay for his education. He…
